Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA

Size: @1 1/4"
Found while stacking my firewood. Had been in the woods under ferns, so it was in damp woodchips as well as the ferns. Seems about ready to pop. At first I thought it had been attacked by a fungus, but then realized it had tethered itself to the log. So impressive!

Thanks for any ID help. Any ideas about how to care for this until it exits the pupa would be appreciated.

Tiger Swallowtail for sure
but I'm not sure if you've got P. glaucus, P. canadensis, or both in your immediate area. I'd guess the later (?).

Location
Should this be at genus since Papilio glaucus is also in the state?

Hi John
Yes. you are probably right. I went with David's sense that canadensis was more likely, but probably a shaky assumption on my part.
Thanks.

Swallowtail of some sort
There aren't too many species to choose from around here... Beautiful chrysalis & photo.

Thanks!
Thanks Charley. I've got it inside in a box, but don't know if that's the best option. Hopefully I'll look in at the right time. Otherwise it gets set free and we'll know the species.
