Skipper? - Pyrgus communis

Skipper? - Pyrgus communis
Alameda County, California, USA
September 6, 2009
Size: ~1/2 in. (13 mm) bl
On society garlic inflorescence, midday, sunny, warm. Is this another skipper like yesterday's Common Checkered Skipper? It looks darker, and it stayed put as the camera approached within inches. Yesterday's skipper was aloof and flighty.

Maybe this one's from Alabama?

That'd be a long skip
Okay, okay. Looking at other images and comments, I see that this species is highly variable in color and the females are darker.

This one has almost none of the white margin on hindwings that most of the photos show.
