looks like female Carolina
The cryptic coloring would make it a Carolina on the East Coast, but there are some Western and Southwestern mantids that are also cryptic and I'm not familiar with them.

If it's a Carolina, it is probably a female because the legs are completely brown. Leg color of nymphs might be variable, though - can't be sure till they're adults.
