I see we have subspecies. How are they distinguished?

yes - Speyeria cybele
A for subspecies, mostly it's a matter of coloring, size, and where they are found. Have a look at the Butterflies of America web site, where there are quite a few photos (but regrettably no individual maps for each subspecies).

As far as I know, in New Hampshire, they should be regular ol' ssp. cybele, but you're getting not so far away from Nova Scotia up there.
