I have only seen this once before. I am not really sure if it is a Widow spider. He/she lives under a leaf on a bush in my back yard and has been there for over a week, now, seemingly not moving. I generally take shots of it in the early evening as here. The limits of depth of field at these magnifications make it difficult to get a decent all-over shot as it is somewhat largish.

Yes
I think Southern Black Widow is correct. Male. The males aren't dangerous. Feel free to move your image to that guide page.

Lynette,
Thanks for the confirmation. Quick, too. As for posting the image, I have a much clearer one sitting in the camera to be downloaded on Saturday night. I clear the memory card weekly to keep track of the passage of time in my files. Can I sub it for this one?

Yes
If it's the same spider... go for it.

We can confirm male Latrodectus
but someone else will have to provide you with the species, sorry

John and Jane,
Once again, thanks for the fast reply. Sorry to be so late answering, though. As an aside, he is still sitting firmly in his "nest" moving around as little as possible. I always thought the males hunted around for females??? He sure looks lonely. Maybe he needs a night out.

Jon
