Large queen wasp - Tremex columba - female

Large queen wasp - Tremex columba - Female
Salt Lake, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
September 9, 2009
Size: 1.5 inches
The neighbor kids were getting rid of a wasp nest behind their basketball standard and this thing came flying out at them. They sprayed it so much with insect spray it was crisp. Was 1.5 inches from nose to tail (not including ovipositor). Has to be a queen something.
