Size
males: 28-40 mm, females: 39-53 mm
Identification
Heavy bodied, gray and brown with rough pronotum. Often has a ligher "X" mark on dorsum. Hind tibia are yellow. Hind wings show pale coloration: pinkish or orange to yellow.
Females fly poorly.
Range
Eastern and Central United States, into southwest.
Habitat
Pastures, short-grass prairie.
Season
Adults found July-October in much of range, sometimes through winter in south. August-frost (North Carolina).
