Swarming around cavity in soil of forest floor along edge of narrow road through extensive upland oak woods.

Yes,...
...there was an excavation of soil just a few feet from this disturbed nest. Perhaps the same excavating animal dug both cavities but was repelled before finishing this one. Thanks for the ID!
