Why did the beetle grub cross the road?

I was going to write that this beetle grub was 5.25 to 5.5 cm but with ruler in hand I'd say its more like 7 cm: mondo!

Most guestimates are off in the other direction
one of the big scarabs? I've never seen one above ground and so stretched out

 
I Measured With Thumb & Forefinger
but my cms were too big. I'd say that 7.5 cm is about right; would change with locomotive undulations. It struck me as unusual for it to be crossing the (remote, dirt) road. We quite literally crossed paths.
