Agonum cupreum

Agonum cupreum
Nosehill Park, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
June 27, 2009
Size: ~10 mm
A highly variable species both in colour and body shape (I have specimens that range from coppery/greenish like on this specimen to having a violaceous sheen). Pronotum is rounded with no trace of hind angles; legs and antennae are black. Unlike many other Agonum, this species is often found away from water and is common in open, dry grassland habitats.

Agonum cupreum
is well known to me in WI. Besides the combination of characters you stated Tim, also note the required four punctures on each dorsal elytron. Under high magnification you should also be able to verify the unique pit or notch atop antennomere #3 as described by Lindroth.
