Unknown Spider Specimen - Nephila clavipes

Unknown Spider Specimen - Nephila clavipes
Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama, USA
September 11, 2009
Size: 4" (total); 1" (body)
Found this spider in the front yard this afternoon. The web itself spans about 3 feet. The spider is approximately 4" in diameter and the body length is close to 1". Is this spider considered dangerous? At the time, we are leaving it alone, and keeping the dogs inside. This image was taken about 1400 hours (USA CST).

Golden-silk spider
This is an adult female of Nephila clavipes. Despite her size she is not dangerously venomous to people or pets (but I suspect you already knew that).

Many thanks
Thank you for helping me solve our interesting little mystery. I've been enjoying reading up on our newest neighbor (although I am still a little nervous about letting our dogs roam freely in the yard).
