Unknown Spiny Caterpillar - Acronicta oblinita

Size: 1.5 inches
This guy was not on a plant when I found him next to a lakeside trail so I don't know what to feed him. I'm also wondering how dangerous the spines are. Shown with his frass in case that's helpful. Thanks!
