False Bombardier Beetle - Galerita bicolor

False Bombardier Beetle - Galerita bicolor
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
September 9, 2003
Size: 18 mm
Found wandering inside a house by my (very beetle tolerant) spouse. Chilled, posed, and released. Length measured by photographing adjacent to a scale. This is a very active beetle, and hard to photograph.

This is Galerita bicolor, according to shape of head, shown in key on p. 128, figs. 131-133 of Ciegler, Ground Beetles of South Carolina (1). Dillon, p. 105 (2), keys B. bicolor vs. B. janus based on shape of pronotum, also indicating this is G. bicolor.
