looks like a Grass Spider, Agelenopsis genus
To me. It's a funnel-web spider. There are lots of them out this time of year.

I agree
This is a male, and he seems to be missing one of his "pedipalps," the leg-like mouthparts that look like little boxing gloves in mature male spiders. He is wandering in search of a mate no doubt. I like that you refer to him as a "friend.":-)
