How high was this when you first spotted it?
...and what type of vegetation was it on?

 
Not sure...
...my cousin saw it fly onto that vegetation, which was low, probably 18" or less off the ground.

 
Missed the tree?
These bulky katydids do not fly very well, mostly gliding from tree to tree, and I think sometimes they misjudge the distance, or get flushed by a predator and end up much closer to the ground than they normally are.
