wasp, red eyed pupa & cocoon

wasp, red eyed pupa & cocoon
Ames, Story County, Iowa, USA
September 3, 2009
Size: 5 mm
The lightly woven cocoon with what appeared to be a red eyed pupa caught my attention. It was attached to the back side of a maple leaf. I photographed it every couple of days until the wasp emerged on 10-Sep-2009. I let the wasp go free.

Crochet?
I wonder what kind of crochet stitch they use. But, seriously, I would like to understand the mechanism of building this cocoon.
