Queen
Danaus gilippus

male

Not a Monarch, but a close relative
Like the Monarch, this is in the genus Danaus. Judging by the guide's descriptions for the other two members of its genus, this is a Queen (Danaus gilippus) rather than a Soldier (Danaus eresimus). Regardless, this is a male--you can tell by the swollen areas on one of the veins of the hind wing.

By the way...thank you!

=)
Okay, like Entomology couldn't get any more difficult for me! Now I have a male, Queen? =) Who decided to pull that one on those of us who are challenged chewing gum and walking at the same time?

Mother Nature did it. :^)
I think it's her way of ensuring that the natural world will always inspire our curiosity.
