Insect on grass - Svastra

Insect on grass - Svastra
Collinsville, Illinois, USA
August 1, 2009
These insects would settle on the tall grass blades for the night and leave when the sun hit them in the morning. They did this for a couple of weeks but have not seen them in the last 3 weeks. Thought they were Bees but I'm not sure Bees behave like this.

look like Long-horned Bees
I think that's how they sleep. I recently found one doing similar, hanging from the bottom of a flower. Somebody else may have more to say. Welcome to Bugguide!

long-horned bee - Melissodes desponsa
Thank you I went back and looked at the photo before I cropped it. You are right it does look like it. When I first found them there were almost a dozen together on the grass stems and then found another group doing the same thing in another part of my yard on a different type of grass. Thanks Again!

species
I don't know if it's the same species. Let's leave it with long-horned bee until the experts chime in, just to be safe :)

I don't think it's M. desponsa
The image is not clear, but I suspect it is Svastra (Epimelissodes) atripes (Cresson, 1872)
