Large Milkweed Bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) - Oncopeltus fasciatus

Large Milkweed Bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) - Oncopeltus fasciatus
Glassy Mountain, Spartenberg County, South Carolina, USA
September 10, 2009
Size: 1/2 inch
Color in this photo (more or less accurate) is yellow or gold with black markings but the guide photos from this site (BugGuide) are usually more reddish orange with some yellow-gold exceptions. Photos in the National Audobon Society "Insects and Spiders" show orange while the photo in the NWF guide also shows orange. These are immatures. The disposition on the flower was unusual. Typically they were on nearby milkweed.

large milkweed bug
Is what they look like to me. Though I'm seeing some minor differences, but it could be due to where they are in their development. What a great shot - the color is awesome! I only find them on milkweed plants.

anyone need a magazine cover?
I love this image! Great color, well-cropped. I can imagine on a National Geographic cover. If it were two feet high I'd put it on my wall!

Not beetles.
Some kind of bug nymphs.
