We have found a few spiders like this one around the back entrance to our house. I am wondering if this is a brown widow spider or a form of the black widow. This one built it's web on the stairs and was really quite active. I thought they didn't usually inhabit places that are busy with activity from humans? I am also curious as to the best method to get rid of them and how to make sure they do not get inside our house. I have a small baby that is on the floor playing often and I also have a small dog that loves to chase, torture and eat spiders. How dangerous is thier venom?

Western Black Widow
is my guess based on your location. You can see the info page here.
