Hesperapis possibly fulvipes? - Hesperapis

Hesperapis possibly fulvipes? - Hesperapis
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
May 3, 2001
Size: BL about 8 mm
We saw this Hesperapis on Desert Sunflower (Geraea canescens)in the low sandy desert where the sunflowers line the road. It is the only one of this type we have seen and this is our only photo. I am also posting an enlargement of the wing.

DiscoverLife.org has several photos of H. fulvipes that really seem to match this bee. Also some of the traits fit Crawford's original description: flagellum reddish, wings faintly dusky, stigma and veins honey color; slightly ochraceous bands in segments 1-5, segment 6 almost entirely covered with hair. Also, Geraea canescens is the host plant for this species.

But, I also know that there are many undescribed species in this genus.

Hesperapis subgenus Carinapis
Thank you so much, Dr. Ascher, for refining and narrowing in on the classification of this Hesperapis and of several other bees. Your help is much appreciated.
