The Meadow Spittlebug does look very similar. The main differences I can see are that the wings on my insect are more pointed and not covered with fine hairs (at least that I can see in the photos), and also the thorax is shaped a bit differently.

 
Genus Aphrophora
Check out Genus Aphrophora. I recall Dr. Hamilton saying this is very similar to the Meadow Spittlebug, but is characterized by the pitted surface rather than fine hairs.

That appears to be a match! None of the ones I see on here look like mine, though. Even one that came from my county (see here) looks nothing like the one in my photos. Hopefully it will be possible to narrow down a certain species from these photos.

If it's anything like the Meadow Spittlebug, the color can be variable to a great degree, making it very hard.
