tiny black-headed carabid - Perigona nigriceps

tiny black-headed carabid - Perigona nigriceps
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
August 19, 2005
Size: 2.5 mm
Ferequently comes to UV lights. There is another tiny black-headed species that comes to UV lights, but its elytra are strongly striated whereas this one is so weakly striated that it appears smooth.

Perigona nigriceps
looks good, based on this CBIF image taken from the bottom of this page where its length is given as 2 mm, plus the images on a page from Russia giving a length of 2.9 mm.
In Canada, it's found only in Ontario and Quebec, but it also appears on beetle lists from Hawaii and several places in Europe.

Found it
The species has gotten itself to New Zealand, where a Web site appears to give the following taxonomic breakdown:
Family CARABIDAE
Division PSYDRIFORMES
Subfamily HARPALINAE
Supertribe LEBIITAE
Tribe PERIGONINI
Genus Perigona Laporte de...
Subgenus Trechicus LeCont...
Perigona (Trechicus) nigricep...

subfamily?
CBIF calls all carabid groups tribes, with no mention of subfamily. Which subfamily would you guess P nigriceps belongs in?

Good work!
Thanks Robin! I'm guessing I have some Perigona nigriceps larvae and if they survive to adulthood for confirmation, I'll place their images on the guide page as well.
