some type of hopper? - Antianthe expansa

some type of hopper? - Antianthe expansa
Dragoon Mts. foothills west, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
September 18, 2009
Size: about 5 mm long
These caught my attention because they were all clustered on a seemingly dead stalk of Jimson Weed, not far from the ground. At first I thought they were some type of eggs but when touched with my finger they moved slightly. It wasn't until I got home and looked at my photos that I noticed they had eyes and wings. Ants seem to be interested in them and among them were strange orange bugs, perhaps related, perhaps not. I'll let BugGuiders sort this one out!

Keeled Tree Hopper, Antianthe expansa
Similar tree hoppers on Datura that I have seen in the Huachuca Mts. have been identified as the above. Images can be seen here.

Thanks......
....I was pretty sure these spectacular and pretty noticeable tree hoppers would have been photographed by someone else in this area.

They are hoppers-I have no id
They are hoppers-I have no idea what kind-your photo is awesome!
