Man-Faced Spider - Ocrepeira

Man-Faced Spider - Ocrepeira
Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, USA
September 18, 2009
Size: ~6mm?
To start things off - I have NOT photoshopped any of these features onto the abdomen of this spider - I was very careful to process the photos as naturally and subtly as possible so I wouldn't give a false impression to the viewer. If anything, I've gone a bit light on the processing, the "face-like" appearance was even stronger and more prominent to my eyes - it was hard to capture these subtleties with a camera flash!

This first image here is actually a composite of two stills from a short video I took of the spider. These were taken in natural light and give (in my opinion) the best representation of how the spider actually looked to the naked eye. This is the location where I first spotted the spider - on the side of a railing on my back porch.

Anyone know the species (or at least genus) of this little spider? I am completely stumped - I've seen a few similar orb-weavers, but nothing quite like this!

Kansas School Naturalist
list both O. globosa and O. ectypa as present in Kansas

Howell and Jenkins
image one of the species, which they call Wixia ectypa, on page198, which looks very good, at least as a genus ID. Spiders of North America lists four species and their ranges as follows. They move Wixia into synonymy.
Genus Ocrepeira Marx, 1883 [4 species]

Ocrepeira ectypa (Walckenaer, 1841)
RI, CT, NJ, MD, VA, NC, GA, FL, MO, AR, OH

Ocrepeira georgia (Levi, 1976)
NJ, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, LA, OH

Ocrepeira globosa (F.O. P.-Cambridge, 1904)
KS, TX, AZ

Ocrepeira redempta (Gertsch & Mulaik, 1936)
TX

Looks like globosa is your best bet, but there are others nearby.

Kinda looks like something
in Ocrepeira. Nice pics!

Thanks!
Yeah, Ocrepeira was the first genus I went to as I remembered some of the images from the page... they are certainly similar although none are quite like this one - maybe there is quite a bit of variation among species in that genus.
