Giganticus - Manduca sexta

Giganticus - Manduca sexta
Pleasant Hill, Contra Costa County, California, USA
September 19, 2009
Size: 2 inches long

It's just a common name
A caterpillar with a horn on the end is called a hornworm. It's the same as a bird being called a woodpecker. Being a woodpecker does not mean you stop being a bird. This is both a hornworm and a caterpillar, and a larva too!

Giganticus
Well that makes sense. Thank you bug experts. There's another similar caterpillar? type of bug on the same plant. I'll post a picture of it soon and perhaps you all can help identify it for me.

giganticus
If it's a caterpillar than why is it called a hornworm?

Moved
Moved from Butterflies and Moths. It is a caterpillar. The larva of a Sphinx moth.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

tobacco hornworm
Manduca sexta, the tobacco hornworm also eats tomato and others.

Darn I thought it was a caterpillar
It's still neat looking though
