large beetle - Thasus neocalifornicus

Size: about 4 cm
Seen buzzing at twilight, alighting almost exclusively on mesquite trees. Very hard shouldered. I have a whole new level of respect for the digestive tract of the Sonoran toad that ate one in my driveway.
