Metalmark butterfly? - Phyciodes tharos - female

Metalmark butterfly? - Phyciodes tharos - Female
Great Falls, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
September 20, 2009
Size: 5-6 cm wingspan
This was a small, very active butterfly that I have never seen before. It was probably more orange than the picture shows but this is the only relatively sharp photo of it. I will load one with the wings blurred by motion also. It comes the closest to being a Northern Metalmark.

A Pearl Crescent.

Moved from ID Request.

cropped; looks more like a Crescent
With that wing pattern and those prominent mouthparts, I'm pretty sure it's a crescent - don't know which one, though. Check out genus Phyciodes.

Cropped and adjusted shadow/highlight for a larger, clearer view of the insect.

butterfly
You are right, Abigail. That looks like it. It looks the most like the Pearl Crescent (Phyciodes tharos). Thanks, Vanessa
