Ichneumon wasp - male

Ichneumon wasp - Male
Elkton, Douglas County, Oregon, USA
September 22, 2009
Size: approx 1 1/8 inch
It was a warm, almost muggy night. It was the kind of night that brought all sorts of partygoers to my deck lights. This is one of two handsome Ichneumon males, sharing the front landing, waiting for the ladies to arrive. The front deck is lit by a compact florescent that emits a soft yellowish light - the back deck is lit by one that gives off a colder daylight blue light and seems to attract a different sort of partygoer.

I looked for a match in the guide and came up with Ophioninae.

Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

Thanks for the confirmation, Ross.   They're not only beautiful insects; they're rather fascinating, too.   :-P)

Correct…
The orange coloration, laterally compressed abdomen, large ocelli, characteristic wing venation, and short ovipositor indicate this subfamily. They are highly attracted to lights at night as you have discovered.
