My dad's a bit of a Lepidoptera guy... here's what he has to say about this guy:

"Looks a little like a rockcrawler (Grylloblatta spp.), in which case it is very rare. But the eyes look wrong. Termites don't have such pronounced ocelli (eyes). The antennae look like beetle (Coleoptera) antennae. Could it be an immature Stenocorus nubifer? (Flower Lepturine)? Or Necydalis cavipennis? (Hornet Ionghorn)? I have no idea."

I should mention that it kept flipping it's bright yellow tail 90 degrees straight up. I wish I'd gotten some better angles, but he didn't stick around very long. My dad and I are both very curious to know what he is, any help would be great.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Only one other record of this species later than August in the Guide, only one other record from Ontario. I like data points, I'm moving it despite the blurriness.

Looks to us like a Rove Beetle
Check there while you wait for a better ID from one of the Coleopterists

Rove Beetle!
Ontholestes cingulatus (Gold-and-brown Rove Beetle). I've looked at the pictures, and I'm sure this is the guy. Thank-you!
