Spilosoma Virginica or Virginian tiger moth? - Spilosoma virginica
Ocean Pines, Worcester County, Maryland, USA
September 25, 2009
A very hungry caterpillar that I found feeding on a Brugsmansia in our front yard. As this plant is quite poisonous to humans and other creatures, it's odd to find an insect that takes more than a bite. This specimen looks similar to another specimen so identified. There was a second caterpillar on the same plant that was much paler colored (which I could not locate today), but I gather that this species has both darker and lighter variations.
