Ammophila pictipennis - female

Ammophila pictipennis - Female
Mayflower, Bell Slough, Faulkner County, Arkansas, USA
October 3, 2005
Size: 22-26mm
This may be the only orange-winged Ammophila in my area. Not sure. This one was digging in the field not far from the big Ammophila procera colony. Much smaller than that species, half the size in fact. This one seemed very determined on the perfect closure. I did not witness the earlier activities. Strangely, not long after this, the bigger A. procera came to the exact spot and made some fumbling closure motions. Made me suspicious that the smaller species was stealing a dig site. But I have no proof. I know of no nest parasitism in Ammophila.
