Not beetles at all, but Hemiptera: Lygaeidae -- true bugs.

Heh heh, to the uninitiated, little orange things are ladybugs. That should give me pause before putting my opinion in the subject line. :-)

Yes, they were on a milkweed plant. I saw a group on another plant in which there was noticeable size variation among the individuals.
