Spilosoma Virginica or Virginian tiger moth? - Spilosoma virginica
Ocean Pines, Worcester County, Maryland, USA
September 26, 2009
This is another specimen similar to the one photographed close-up, in its natural place feeding on the Brugsmansia. You can see why they are tricky to locate, as the light coming through the leaf is picked up by the fine white hairs, making the caterpillar a kind of chameleon. It would be very difficult for a bird looking up from the ground to spot this wooly bear against the leaf on which it's feeding. (Besides, Brugsmansias are poisonous, so it might not taste good anyhow.)

???
Excuse my ignorance, but could you give a little more guidance. I've looked several places and not found an "unlink" above images at the bottom. [I think one of the administrators unlinked it before I reviewed it, actually.] I'm only an occasional contributor and not familiar with some of the protocols. I assumed since the specimen was a sibling of the one photographed that this was allowable.
