Anza-Borrego Caterpillar - Vanessa annabella

Anza-Borrego Caterpillar - Vanessa annabella
Henderson Canyon Rd, Borrego Springs, San Diego County, California, USA
March 28, 2004
I don't know what the host plant was...this caterpillar was on a dried up plant skeleton and looked like it was perhaps going to pupate soon. A chrysalis was found on dead twigs very nearby, which may have been the same species. It was within a few feet of this chrysalis...perhaps they're the same species?

A guess...Chlosyne?

Moved from Butterflies and Moths following email correspondence with Lynn Monroe, coauthor of "Butterflies and their Favorite Flowering Plants - Anza-Borrego Desert State Park & Environs"(1).

Vanessa annabella immature
V. annabella adults, eggs, cats and pupae are often seen along Henderson Canyon Road on Cheeseweed (Malva parviflora--Malvaceae), one of its hosts plants, in years of adequate rainfall.
