Hyles lineata burrowing - Hyles lineata

Hyles lineata burrowing - Hyles lineata
Henderson Canyon Rd, Borrgeo Springs, San Diego County, California, USA
March 28, 2004
This caterpillar was very plump, and was energetically excavating this burrow with quick, jerky, curling motions. A few seconds later it finished closing up the entrance and "disappeared". I'm guessing these caterpillars pupate under the sand.
