Another fly - Arctophila flagrans

Another fly - Arctophila flagrans
Santa Fe Ski Basin, near Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, USA
July 16, 2009
Size: 1 cm?
I'm adding this oversharpened image in case you can see the wing veins better. Between this and the facial view, most of the venation is visible, but not all. (Maybe next time I'll try to shade the fly and cut out the glare.)

Thanks for the suggestion, Ron. Mallota certainly seems like a possibility. What it really looks like to me is this unidentified fly photographed by Adalbert Goetz in Colorado, right next door. But I can't rule out Eristalis or any of a number of other possibilities.

Male!
Greetings

Thanks.
I'll move these to the guide, but maybe they belong in Frass, especially this one. Or did you put your ID on this photo because it's the easiest one of this set to identify? If so, maybe it should stay, even though it's ugly.

Nice!
Maybe I'll remember it next time. Color on this was different than other posts.

Now that I'm thinking straight,
maybe that difference in color is a good reason to keep at least some of these pictures.

Agreed
It's not as if we're overwhelmed with posts. Let's treasure each.

Do keep this one because of the comments.

There's no surfeit of Syrphids?
Personally, I don't treasure each picture—the low-quality ones get in my way when I'm looking for the high-quality ones. Of course, maybe I'm missing something in the ones that I think are unhelpful. And I'm beginning to realize why it's good to keep the comments, even the wrong guesses (in view of your suggestion that I search for "Merodon" to find images that look like Merodon).

I think it is Criorhina
I hope you get expert commentary on this one, quite an interesting find. Venation says "syrphid" to me, but I still can't make out the spurious vein.

(Mallota does look good, but I think it's strictly eastern.)

Hm.
According to Martin Hauser here, Criorhina has a straight R4+5. Since this fly has a "loop" there, that would rule out Criorhina. I gather.

Thanks for pointing me to that illustration. Sometimes I can convince myself I see the spurious vein in these pictures.

I too am hoping for expert commentary, but if no one has identified Adalbert Goetz's much clearer images, I'm not expecting much for this one.
