it is just about ready to emerge. Probably has by now. I took
this picture
a few years ago. With flash, the chrysalis is almost transparent and you can see the pre-emergent butterfly.

I don't know if it is alive.
If this chrysalis is really that shade of black and the wings are dark like that, I would say it is dead. At that stage, they should look like this:
