Pacarina puella ? (shoemakeri?)
The cicada above looks like Pacarina puella; however, it lacks the darker wing infuscation often seen in puella & "diagnostic of this species" (a trait that might be subject to variation and similar to shoemakeri?). The pronotum in this image seems to exhibit the centralized "hourglass-shaped" dark region described in shoemakeri (refer to the thumbnail pic's below).




1) Pacarina puella
US Range: AZ, NM, CO, TX, OK, & LA
Host association is usually MESQUITE.
Pacarina puella Davis, Kondratieff et al., 2002: 7, 13, 28.

2) Pacarina shoemakeri
US Range: AZ, NM, CO, and w. TX
Host association is usually JUNIPERS.
Pacarina puella Davis (juniper variety), Sanborn and Phillips, 1995: 481.
Pacarina shoemakeri Sanborn and Heath, Sanborn et al., 2011a: 152, 153.
