Thought I suspect it's a female.

Would I need to see more of the fore wing... or are there other characteristics?

On this one, it's hard to be sure
Usually you can see more of the dark border showing through from above, but this one has the wings so completely overlapping, that little shows. Even so, it looks like there are probably light spots within the dark border of the wings above, which would be a female characteristic. If the abdomen were showing, that would make it easier as well. So, with this one, it's a high probability that it's female, but not certain.
