Black and Red Spideer - Phidippus johnsoni

Black and Red Spideer - Phidippus johnsoni
Mesa - Usery Pass area, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
July 6, 2009
Size: half inch
This little guy looked like a jumping spider but was in the wash area of the Usery Mountain trial, I used a stick just to get it to stop for his portrait, and it reared back and bared its fangs - impressive - rather than a crab like walk it skittered along fairly quickly. About a month later we saw another just like it except the red coloring was markedly lighter, almost light orange. We blended to photos to give a couple of different views.

looks like a Jumping Spider, Phidippus genus
There's probably a few species that can have this general appearance, so I don't know which species it is. But this is a start. Maybe somebody else will say more.

Black and Red Spider
Hi Andrew and all,

I think I found it Johnson jumper (Phidippus johnsoni)

http://www.bugsinthenews.com/Texas%20Spiders/Red-backed%20Jumping%20Spider%20%20San%20Isidro%20TX%20%202%20June%202007%20Cat%20T.htm

Appreciate the help. Have a nice day,
Catherine

Hi Andrew,

Thank you - that sure looks like our 'guy' - he/it was not as glossy as the pictures you sent - reminded me of the gloss of a black horse, but the configuration is very "on."

Hi John,

I'm sorry I don't quite understand - do you want me to repost the picture as two separate ones? Why?

Thank you for your comment.
Catherine

Yes
Please post the picture as two separate ones.
1) Only you and the editors can see the full size image, so everyone else sees the reduced size picture
2) That is kind of how we do it here

Dear John,

Thank you for clarifying that - I understand. I did just update the post with the pictures separated. We get fascinated by the critters we see while hiking (and in the garden) have some great photos of rattle snakes but that is a different forum :-)
