unknown shield-backed katydid - Idiostatus aberrans - Female
Portola, Plumas County, California, USA
August 30, 2009
This pretty green katydid was on a building in a small Sierra Nevada town.

several species are recorded from the general area
Idiostatus aequalis seems a likely candidate, based on appearance. Other species recorded from the area include: I. hermanii, inermis, inyo, and wymorei. I. major occurs not too far to the north. Not a clue how to tell females apart, there aren't enough photos and descriptions published to make this an easy task without associated males.

tough group
I hesitate to even try on shield-backs from California, but the very straight ovipositor here is kind of unusual. I think it may be a species of Idiostatus, but I'm certainly not sure.
