Scaeva pyrastri? - Scaeva pyrastri - male

Scaeva pyrastri? - Scaeva pyrastri - Male
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
March 12, 2005
Size: BL about 11-12 mm
This was seen on a small mustard in culp Valley, elevation about 3000'. It is larger and slightly more robust that E. volucris. Also the abdominal bands are whiter and slightly thinner. The third bands are also more horizontal. The second picture I am posting shows an entirely different critter.

Glad you agree!
And thanks for your comments. Aren't the eyes of this guy something else!

Yes, they are.
I can see how you get Dali out of that. More prosaic, I'd have said they were shaped like saddlebags.

Well, I for one, am onboard with your ID. of Scaeva pyrastri.
No big surprise, huh? Nice shots.
