Scaeva pyrastri? - Scaeva pyrastri - Male
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
March 12, 2005
Size: BL about 11-12 mm
This view showing Dali eyes gives an entirely different impression this this hover fly, so much that I checked to see that they were really the same insect. But, they were taken on the same plant in the same minute. I can't focus and shoot another insect on that short of notice! Also, I noticed a similar view of a female, except for the eyes, in the BugGuide Scaeva pyrastri files. Do you think I am right in this identification?
