This fly is the only insect I've seen with checkered black and white legs.

Phantom Crane flies are magni
Phantom Crane flies are magnificent in flight. The slightly inflated ankles catch the wind, and they gracefully glide through the air, their legs spread in a windmill shape.

Bittacomorpha clavipes is by far the more common of the two Northeastern species. It has the swollen legs and alternating black and white pattern seen here.

What distinguishes the other species? There is no info on the genus/species guide pages.

 
Fat ankles
B. clavipes has enlarged basitarsi, which distinguish it from the only similar-looking Eastern species.
