AZ Bark Scorpion - Centruroides sculpturatus - female

AZ Bark Scorpion - Centruroides sculpturatus - Female
Airport Mesa, Sedona, Yavapai County, Arizona, USA
September 15, 2009
Found inside a large toppled dead tree, which had around 7 or so on and in it. On the same night we found 2 separately on the ground, and no others.

"gertschi" form
This is the striped form of the Arizona bark scorpion, previously known separately as Centruroides gertschi. Nasty sting, be careful around these. Notice the way the tail is "coiled" (a behaviorial trait in Centruroides), look at other species and see that the tail is arched.

Sedona is an interesting area for scorpions: there are 3 known species in the area, and maybe an additional undescribed species in middle Oak Creek Canyon.
