Adult Male Phidippus mystaceus - Phidippus mystaceus - male

Adult Male Phidippus mystaceus - Phidippus mystaceus - Male
Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma, USA
September 26, 2009
I've been searching literally for 3 years now for one of these little guys! What beautiful markings and coloration these males have!

Found on a small conifer in Cleveland county, Oklahoma, on Spetember 26th, 2009.

I'm pretty positive he's an adult male Phidippus mystaceus, but I thought I should at least get a second opinion before moving these photos to the guide page.

If you want to see him in action, I also took a short video of him here:

Glad you weren't 100% sure about ID
I'm very glad you weren't totally sure about the ID and put the photos on the ID request page. Otherwise, I'm not sure when I would have discovered your Flickr photostream. Congrats on the article in Popular Photography! Bugs, the stars and guitars, too!!

Thanks!
Thanks Kathy! Bugs, stars, and guitars - that just about sums me up!

Primo! Phidippus mystaceus Opo
It's gorgeous.

Outstanding shots!
How did you get so close to him? The picture of the chelicerae is especially impressive.

How?
Thanks!

How did I get so close to him?

I just did. Jumpers, like everything else, will stay still from time, allowing for high magnification shots. This guy was pretty active as you can see from the video I posted, making any face shots pretty difficult. But I've got the patience to stick around for however long it may take to get a nice shot of a beautiful spider - they're certainly worth the pain!

He was cleaning his eyes at the time of that chelicerae shot, so I just fired away hoping I could get at least one frame of them and the fangs in focus. Sure enough, one of the 12 I took was focused perfectly, so I cropped it close, and was done!

Camera
Thomas,
I would like to know what camera equipment you used for this shot. It is certainly beautiful.

Opo - Bravo! Bravo!
Extraordinary images of a magnificent spider. If images like these were on the nightly news the talking heads would soon be ignored. Your work brings out the breathtaking colors and forms that inspire those wise enough to get on their knees.

Congratulations and keep up the great work!!!
