Pristoceuthophilus sp? - Pristoceuthophilus - female

Pristoceuthophilus sp? - Pristoceuthophilus - Female
Enumclaw, Forested Unincorporated King County, Washington, USA
September 15, 2009
Size: 19mm without ovipositor
I thought this might have been a Ceuthophilus Spotted Camel Cricket, but after hearing from Eric I don't think that anymore. It was near the open vent that leads directly to the crawl space under our house. If there's enough moisture down there, fungus can grow...and I think these crickets will eat it. It was very docile and never moved a hair while I took pictures that night. Also, they don't have wings so they don't chirp. Is there an expert who could help me out with this mystery? I don't, however, still have the specimen. I fed it to one of my female Steatoda grossa.

Really difficult to say for certain, but in western Washington state one is much more likely to find camel crickets in the genus Pristoceuthophilus. Mature males are easy to identify because they have a big tooth on the hind femur, and an obvious "crook" in the hind tibia. Females like this one look nearly identical to Ceuthophilus, though I don't think that genus occurs west of the Cascades.

I think you're right, Eric.
I would be willing to bet on your ID. I don't know much about cricket identification, so when I first saw this one I assumed Ceuthophilus. Thank you for your information!
