I was out shooting butterflies this afternoon,but this was one I wasn't familiar with. He was really pretty,and I knew he wasn't like the gulf fritillaries I usually shoot,but there are some similiarities.

They are distant relatives
in the same family. This one is a Painted Lady - Vanessa cardui.

Hi David,
Thanks so much! It is really kinda funny... I had said to my husband when I saw this,"I don't know what this one is."We kept talking about different ones we had seen and I said I had never seen a Painted Lady..to which he replied "A WHAT?". I said "a Paited Lady! I really wish I could see one"... So I think this is ironic !
