Mastigoproctus giganteus mating 1 - Mastigoproctus tohono - male - female

Mastigoproctus giganteus mating 1 - Mastigoproctus tohono - Male Female
Southwest Research Station, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
October 8, 2009
Size: 80mm (not including whip)
M. giganteus mating ritual. Described in Proc. 2003 Invertebrates in Captivity Conf., pp. 73-80. Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute: Tucson, AZ (2003)by Justin O. Schmidt. Initial "chase and grapple" stage was not observed in these individuals. They went straight to "dancing" stage, as seen here: the male (left) grasps the antenniform legs of the female in his pedipalps, and the tips of those legs (tarsomeres) in his chelicerae. The two engage in a tug-of-war which lasted, in this case, about 5 hours.
